Rutter – Suite Antique (1979)

Today’s choice is a late 20th century take on Baroque music using pretty much the same forces as Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto 5 and Orchestral Suite 2 – it was composed for a concert including the fifth Brandenburg, hence its forces and in Rutter’s words ‘paying homage to the forms and styles of Bach’s day’.

It was written for the flautist Duke Dobing and the London Baroque Soloists, as part of the Cookham Festival in 1979. The Suite is in six movements:

  • Prelude
  • Ostinato
  • Aria
  • Waltz (which is not Baroque)
  • Chanson
  • Rondeau
