This is a c.1500s German hymn concerning the Virgin Mary, and the ‘Tree of Jesse’, which is the family tree/genealogy of Jesus.

First published in 1599

The original has been translated in different ways. It’s known mostly as ‘Lo, how a rose e’er blooming, From tender stem hath sprung’, but in 1919 the young Herbert Howells set a translation by Catherine Winkworth, as ‘A Spotless rose is blowing’.

So for today, the original, the version by Howells, and a 21st century by the Swedish composer Jan Sandström (who is more famous for his Motorbike Concerto) which sets the chorale against a wordless cloud of harmony sung by the main choir.
