Haydn – Trumpet Concerto (1796)

Anton Weidinger was Imperial and Royal Court trumpeter in Vienna during the Classical era, and was friends with Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Hummel.

He worked on creating a keyed trumpet so as to be able to play a chromatic scale, rather than the natural harmonic series of Baroque trumpets.

Both Haydn and Hummel wrote Trumpet Concerti for Weidinger, and today’s choice is the E flat concerto by Haydn, who wrote it at the age of 64;
