Cavalli – Requiem for 8 Voices (1676)

Cavalli was a Venetian composer, once a pupil of Monteverdi at San Marco and then eventually took over from him, becoming a master of opera and church music.

It’s thought he composed this for his funeral – a common practice – and it is in a more formal and traditional cori spezzati style (meaning choirs of voices and instruments placed far apart, something San Marco was perfect for).
