Composed in Salzburg in 1773 when aged 17, allegedly two days after finishing Symphony 24. There are elements that are similar to Haydn’s Symphony 39 of 1765, also in G minor.
Like Haydn’s Trauer Symphony composed the year before, it has elements of the fashionable Sturm and Drang style, opening with a syncopated Allegro on brio, focusing on the tonic, dominant, and diminished 7th.
The Andante has a sighing figure in muted violins, and the Minuet a very strong triple time feel. The Allegro finale has a elements of the first movement, but in a more rambunctious manner.
