Rachmaninoff – Prelude in D major Op.23 No.4 (1903)

Composed in 1903 as the fourth of Rachmaninoff’s Op.23 Ten Preludes, this piece is in ternary form, with a gentle lyrical melody over a rolling left hand pattern.

The middle section has a number of modulations leading to a typical Rachmaninoff climax, before a repeat of the opening section with a bell-like melody (ah, Sergei and those bells), above played by the left hand over the top of the right.
