Faust is a five-act opera by French composer Charles Gounod using Goethe’s version of the German legend of a man who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for power (you may have seen the Simpsons’ version…).
Gounod focuses the plot on the romance between Faust (a philosopher) and a young woman called Marguerite. Her brother, Valentin, is a soldier.
In Scene 2 of Act 3, the soldiers return from the battlefield victorious, which gives us today’s choice.
