His father was in charge of the choir at St David’s Cathedral in the far southwest corner of Wales, and Thomas was a chorister. At the age of 12 he moved to London to study with William Byrd, and then a few years later moved to Worcester to be in charge of the choir at the cathedral there.
Alongside the imitative motet/anthem style of the English Renaissance, there was the new ‘songs to the organ’, or verse anthems, which are accompanied choral pieces that alternate solo/duet sections with full choir.
