Debussy – Trois chansons de Charles d’Orléans (1909)

Today’s choice are three songs composed in 1898 and 1908, premiered in 1909. They are Debussy’s only work for unaccompanied choir, and set medieval poetry by Charles, Duke of Orléans.

The style can be said to echo the neo-classical trend at the time in composition, such as modality and polyphony.

  1. Dieu! qu’il la fait bon regarder!
  1. Quand j’ai ouy le tambourin sonner
  1. Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain
