Romantic Thursday: Coleridge-Taylor – African Dance (African Suite) (1898)

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s African Suite, Op. 35 (1898), is a four-movement musical work originally composed for piano, aiming to blend African musical idioms with Western classical traditions.

Influenced by his friendship with poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the suite explores themes of African heritage, with the high-energy final movement, “Danse Nègre,” being its most famous and frequently performed section.
