Beethoven – Elegiac song (“Sanft wie du lebtest”) Op.118

Beethoven’s Elegiac Song (“Sanft wie du lebtest”), Op. 118, is a short, tender, and rarely performed choral work in E major, composed in 1814 and published in 1826.

Scored for four mixed voices (SATB) with string quartet or piano accompaniment, it was written in memory of Eleonore Pasqualati, the young wife of his friend and patron Baron Johann Pasqualati.

Key Aspects of Op. 118:

  • Context: Written for the 3rd anniversary of Eleonore Pasqualati’s death, who died at age 24, it reflects a sense of quiet mourning and sincere respect.
  • Text: The lyrics, “Sanft, wie du lebtest, hast du vollendet, zu heilig für den Schmerz! Kein Auge wein’ ob des himmlischen Geistes Heimkehr” (Gently, as you lived, have you died, too holy for sorrow! Let no eye shed tears for the spirit’s heavenly homecoming), emphasize peace and spiritual homecoming rather than tragic loss.
  • Structure: The piece alternates between quiet, hymn-like outer sections and a more dramatic, minor-mode middle section.
